Five Famous Sports Car Movies in Film History

People love car racing movies. That is why there are such a large number of them. You will witness at least a dozen of low and high-budget car-based movies every year.  The majority of the audience supports this genre, and they crave more of it.  But how many of those picture movies hit right on the spot? Only a handful of these movies can stand up to the test of time. To help you binge-watch the right selection, we have prepared a list of the best and most famous sports car movies in film history.

Days of Thunder

Released in 1990, Days of Thunder stars none other than Tom Cruise. This sports drama follows a Young Racer, Cole Trickle, as he makes his way into the Indianapolis 500. He has years of experience in open-wheel racing, with several championship trophies.  It is a flawed but fun movie for racing lovers. The movie has some well-shot race sequences that are enough to excite the audience. If that’s not enough, John C. Riley, Nicole Kidman, and Michael Rooker also star in Days of Thunder.

The Fast and The Furious

Luckily, one of the most popular franchises also happens to have a lot of car action in it. The movie focuses on street racers Dominic Toretto and Brian O’Conner, played by Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, respectively.  The twist occurs when Paul Walker’s character turns out to be undercover police offer. The franchise has nine movies, with the 10th releasing in 2023. Therefore, you can have a fun racing movie marathon with it.  However, the franchise has become more action-driven with its last movies. That is why it is placed in the fourth number.

Gone in 60 Seconds

This remake of the 1947 movie with the same name stars everyone’s favorites, Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. It was released in 2000 and has a car-based plot. However, there are not many sports elements besides some of the well-edited car action sequences.  The movie follows Memphis Raines, a retired master car thief who must come back to his old job and steal fifty cars in one night. Whether it is sports-related or not, it will surely keep you on the edge of your seat.

If you have ever seen any Pixar movies, the chances are that you might have heard of Cars. It is an animated movie for the whole family to watch together. The movie takes place in a universe where everyone is a car and has important messages about friendship and family.  The protagonist, Lightning McQueen, is voiced by unmatchable Owen Wilson. Other cast includes Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, and Tony Shalhoub.

Ford v Ferrari

If you are looking for a more story-oriented tale, there is no better option than Ford v Ferrari. Starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, the movie tells the story of Le Mans in 1966. It shows how Ford stepped up their game to defeat Ferrari, an already-established name.  Besides excellent performances from the talented cast, the movie is perfectly shot. The racing scenes are incredible to look at, and the story plays out well too. It was released in 2009 and is considered one of the best sports car racing movies in film history.
